Progressives come together to support Denise Powell in high-stakes primary with implications for Nebraska’s “Blue Dot”
Today a coalition of national progressive organizations announced a major investment in the Democratic Primary for Nebraska Congressional District 2. The Fight For Nebraska PAC will support Denise Powell and educate voters about the implications of John Cavanaugh’s candidacy via independent expenditure.
NE-2 is one of the only congressional districts in the country that voted for Harris (Harris +4.6) that is currently held by a Republican. It is widely seen as a top Democratic flip prospect.
Fight for Nebraska PAC is supporting Denise Powell based on her viability and track record. A mom, small business owner, and community activist, Powell has consistently polled as the most viable Democrat in the general election, and has raised the most financial support of any Democratic candidate in the race.
“Denise Powell’s support is growing because she has a proven track record of fighting for Nebraskans – from defending abortion rights to protecting public school funding to standing up to ICE. That’s the kind of leader we need in Congress.”
Fight for Nebraska PAC will also inform voters about concerns about long-time State Senator John Cavanaugh vacating his seat in the Nebraska legislature to go to Congress. The Nebraska legislature is currently one vote away from a Republican supermajority.
If Cavanaugh vacates his seat, Governor Pillen would be empowered to appoint his replacement. This would give Republicans enough votes to pass congressional and legislative gerrymandering, as has been seen in other red-leaning states, as well as eliminate the “Blue Dot,” and pass a total abortion ban.
“The next Presidential race may well come down to a single electoral college vote. The stakes for the country couldn’t be much higher. For 2026, Democrats need to flip CD-02. For 2028, Democrats need to protect Omaha’s Electoral College vote. If given any chance, Republicans will change the rules to give themselves the advantage, so Democrats should be extra cautious about giving them that chance. ”
Alongside her strength in polling and fundraising, Powell is endorsed by a number of progressive organizations, including:
